Advent 2014 – 4 days ’til Christmas

And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. Luke 2:17-18

JESUS CHRIST IS KING!

Australia is experiencing terrible times right now. Eight children murdered yesterday in Cairns in the far north east. This within days of two people murdered in the heart of Sydney by an Islamic terrorist.

All bad news just before this time of Christmas when there should be celebration and rejoicing. Sadly, many within the Australian community will see nothing about which to rejoice and celebrate.

extra extraWhile all on our horizon appears bleak, around 2000 years ago there was good news, the good news of a Saviour who had been born. This good news was brought to some shepherds who were tending their sheep in the fields during the night.

The shepherds’ lot was not a good one in those days. Their job was considered the lowest of the low and they, unclean. Israel’s lot was probably not much better being subjugated by a super power and dominated by a tyrannical puppet king. So good news would have been welcome then.

Good news is to be told. You can’t hide it under a bushel. And that is just what the shepherds did. When they had verified what the angels told them, they spread it abroad; ‘they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child’. They ‘returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.’

Christians, like the shepherds, have good reason to celebrate and rejoice at the birth of their Saviour and King.

The following carol Good Christian Men Rejoice is attributed to Heinrich Suso, translated by John M Neale

Good Christian men rejoice with heart and soul, and voice
Give ye heed to what we say: News! News! Jesus Christ is born today
Ox and ass before him bow; and he is in the manger now
Christ is born today, Christ is born today

Good Christian men rejoice, with heart and soul and voice
Now ye hear of endless bliss: Joy! Joy! Jesus Christ was born for this
He has opened heaven’s door, and man is blessed forevermore
Christ was born for this, Christ was born for this

Good Christian men rejoice, with heart and soul and voice
Now ye need not fear the grave: Peace! Peace! Jesus Christ was born to save
Calls you one and calls you all, to gain his everlasting hall
Christ was born to save, Christ was born to save
