Advent 2014 – 10 days ’til Christmas

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:76-79

sunriseA couple of weeks ago, a preacher stated: ‘Darkness cannot extinguish light, but light can extinguish darkness.’ I wrote in my notes: ‘Darkness has no power. Light is all powerful.’

Of course this principle is clearly spelt out in Scripture:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5

Zechariah, by the power of the Holy Spirit, beautifully prophesies about light and darkness and how God will send his Son to enlighten his people bringing them out of the darkness and despair of sin.

Light is a glorious thing. By it we see creation in all its splendour. We see colours in a multitude of tones and shades. We see forms in a vast array shapes and sizes. We see shadows. We see movement.

And by the light emanating from the ‘sunrise’ who has visited us in the babe of Bethlehem, we see the way out of darkness and death and into light and life through forgiveness of sins.

How tender and merciful is our God!
