Advent 2014 – 14 days ’til Christmas

Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. Matthew 2:2

Apart from the stars we see in the night sky, our concept of stars has sadly diminished with the ever-advancing onslaught of technology. Movie stars, pop stars, sports stars, etc have tried to hijack that part of the beautiful creation that declares the glory of God. But they pale into insignificance compared to the myriads of stars Abram was told to count, if he could, the night God promised that his descendants would be as they are.

starAnd further, they (the movie/pop/sports stars) are absolutely nothing when you consider Jesus who said:

I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star. Revelation 22:16

It seems that the wise men of the east were astrologers who studied the stars. Of course they would have been very different from the dime-a-dozen astrologers we know today who predict our futures which may or may not have a good outcome and may or may not eventuate. I guess the more vague the prediction, the more likely it will come about. A bit like the bigger the target at the shooting range, the more likely you are to hit it.

These men knew how to read the stars. They learnt from them that the king of the Jews had been born. When his star rose it was a sign, to those who were willing, to acknowledge the one truly great star of the universe.

And when wise people are prepared to travel hundreds of kilometres, and at great expense to the management one would assume, in order to greet the new king, you know something big has happened.

Unfortunately for the movie/pop/sports stars (but fortunately for us) their light fades oh so quickly.

Unlike the Bright Morning Star who shines brighter than ever.
