For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:6-7
Jesus did not just happen to be born in a manger in a stable in Bethlehem around 2,000 years ago. He was not just the son of Joseph and Mary. He was not your ordinary Joe Blow healthy bouncing baby boy, the product of careful family planning, born to an everyday happily newly married couple.
His birth was planned, not by Joseph and Mary, but by God. Hundreds of years before, his birth was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, predestined in eternity by God and effected in the stable in Bethlehem.
The prediction in Isaiah 9 speaks of a boy child, the throne of David and a kingdom, everlasting government and peace, justice and righteousness.
King David and King Solomon and those who followed had feet of clay, and very powdery clay at that. The throne and the kingdom of Isaiah 9 require a king, a ruler, who will govern and minister in a way no other sovereign has ever done before and whose righteous and just reign will bring eternal peace.
Isaiah 9’s boy child has been realised in Jesus Christ. He was born King of God’s eternal kingdom.
