And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people…” (Luke 2)
What good news of great joy could anyone bring to a group of low-lifes such as these shepherds? They were unclean and despised. Who would bother?
And what good news of great joy could anyone bring to ‘all the people’ who have rebelled against the holy God and fallen far short of his glory?
We read in the gospels of the New Testament that Jesus did not come to save those who considered themselves righteous, and better than shepherds and tax collectors and poor widows. (Mark 2:17)
He came to save sinners:
…to proclaim good news to the poor…to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. (Luke 4:16-19)
Now that is the good news of great joy!
And the shepherds? Well, I reckon they were saved.
