An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not…” (Luke 2)
When an angel of the Lord appears, people are usually afraid. And who wouldn’t be afraid when the brilliant radiance of the Lord’s glory shines around you?
The angel Gabriel told Mary not to be afraid. The shepherds were also told not to fear.
Our God is first a loving God. We need not fear him if we believe in him. The apostle John in his gospel stated:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
God is also a Judge, but we are told he:
…is not slow to fulfil his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
How wonderful to know that when we believe in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and our confessed sins are forgiven, we will not be judged and we can come into God’s glorious light-filled presence with great joy having been granted repentance and eternal life with him.
