All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet … (Matthew 1)
The Old Testament is the wonderful first part of the Bible that foretold many of the events surrounding the birth, life and death of the Messiah.
Not least of these events was the prophecy concerning Mary, the virgin. In response to the unbelief of Ahaz, the prophet Isaiah addressed the house of David, the royal line, stating:
The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7)
We can look back in hindsight and see that God had a great plan in order to fulfil his purposes for the saving of his people. His plan was not one we could work out, implement or accomplish. It was full of impossibilities, but as the angel declared to Mary: ‘nothing is impossible with God.’
After all, he created the universe ex nihilo.
And after all, he did the impossible: he re-created me to be one of his children.
