advent – three

…Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Luke 1)

Again, the impossible. A woman in her old age falling pregnant. Again a remarkable thing that an unborn baby, a foetus, would leap for joy while still in his mother’s womb.

Elizabeth knew she was in the presence of the Almighty, as did her unborn child. One can sense the joy of the Lord as she was filled with the Holy Spirit of God and spoke words of blessing to Mary.

What an extraordinary time for Mary and Joseph, and Elizabeth and Zechariah, in their anticipation of what was to happen over the next few months. What elation in the knowledge they had been graced with a special visitation from the Lord and their willingness to be used for such noble purposes.

Oh to be filled with this same sense of joy and expectation as we wait for this special time of year when we remember the coming into the world of the Saviour of the world.

And further, to be filled with joy when we experience the presence of the almighty God, the Lord of all, in our lives and we are willing to be used by God the Holy Spirit to point others to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only one who can save us from the penalty of our sin.

Come thou long expected Jesus Christy Nockels, Chris Tomlin
